Case Study
Project Brief
Artistic Vision assists people with visual disabilties who want to create art. Artistic Vision is a line of art supplies that incorporates design elements with the struggles faced by people with visual disabilties in mind. These supplies will reduce stresses related to visual diabilities when it comes to creating art and allow these people to feel comfortable with the artistic process.
Strategy
The first part of the strategy of creating Artistic Vision was to do research on how people with visual disabilties feel about creating art and techniques they use during the process. This research then helped me decide on what design elements to incorporate into the packaging and product design. These elements include textures, large and bold fonts, Braille, and a high-contrast color scheme. The next part of the stretegy was coming up with a brand name and logo. I came up with the name Artistic Vision and a simple but bold logo to go with it. I came up with the name Artistic Vision because it is a metaphor for the artist’s perspective that allows them to create something extraordinary and has little to do with their actual visual abilities. For the logo, I wanted to incorporate simple symbols with a bold font. The next part of the strategy was to figure out the types of art supplies to be featured within the brand. I chose to feature acrylic paint, colored pencils, paint brushes, and a variety pack of artist paper. The next part of the strategy was to create the packaging and product design.
First, I began with creating flat files for each product. Once I had the templates and design in place, I started adding colors with high-contrast against one another as well as creating a space for the Braille featured on the packaging. Once the designs were polished, I created mockups for each product in order to feature them together as a collection as well as showcase the textures used in the design.
Challenges
Everyone deserves to feel comfort in creativity. Art is a visual concept which hinders visually impaired people to experience it in the same way as everyone else. Not only do they have difficulty seeing a piece of art but they also do not have many of the means necessary for them to create it. There are visually impaired people in the world that want to create but do not feel the confidence to do so.
Challenges faced during the process of this project mostly consisted of what design elements should be used. Braille was especially difficult to incorporate into the final design as there are many guidelines that need to be followed to ensure readability.
Design Solution
My process on creating Artistic Vision was to focus on something that would make a difference in the lives of people with visual disabilties and provide them with tools to create art with confidence. I was able to create a design that allows all people on the visual disability spectrum to create art through several design elements. For the colors, I chose a high-contrast primary color scheme along with a bold sans serif font for easy readability. The textures incorporated into the boxes for the acrylic paint, colored pencils, and paint brushes symbolize the type of paper they are used on. The textures on the pencils and paint tubes help to distinguish the color.
During the course of a semester I worked on researching struggles associated with having a visual disabiliity, interviewed people that struggle with a visual disabilty, and I researched design elements I could use to successfully reach my project goal.
Effectiveness
The design of Artistic Vision works because it includes inclusive design features that people with visual disabilities mentioned would be beneficial in creating art. Artistic Vision uses elements that inspire people with visual disabilies to start the artistic process with confidence.
